BBC teach resources (KS3,4&5)

Making use of archive footage from the award-winning 2018 documentary Stephen: The Murder that Changed a Nation and featuring interviews with Stuart Lawrence, former secondary school teacher and younger brother of Stephen, these BBC Teach films:

  • explore attitudes towards identity, diversity and immigration in British society before the murder of Stephen Lawrence,
  • examine the effect that institutional racism had on the investigation into the case, and
  • explore the public inquiry into the failures of the original investigation and the changes in the law that mean suspects can be retried.

The films can be drawn upon to supplement or follow up the Secondary Stephen Lawrence Day Key Stage Assemblies/tutor group sessions and support in-class discussions about Stephen’s life and legacy. They are also accompanied by detailed notes for teachers, with specific links to the GCSE Citizenship curriculum.
