Stephen Lawrence Day takes place on April 22nd every year, on the anniversary of Stephen’s death. A national moment of reflection and a call to action. Each year, we honour Stephen’s life by inspiring individuals, schools, and communities to drive change. Stephen Lawrence Day is more than remembrance, it’s a day to celebrate progress, challenge injustice, and empower young people to imagine their futures. We provide schools, workplaces, and individuals with resources and inspiration to participate meaningfully.

Black History Month Spotlight: Elsie Owusu OBE
@elsie_owusu OBE is a Ghanaian-British architect and urban designer whose work bridges continents and communities. As Principal of Elsie Owusu Architects, she has led major projects across the UK, Nigeria, and Ghana, including her role as co-lead architect for the UK Supreme Court and London’s Green Park Station.
A pioneer in sustainable and community-led design, Elsie is currently developing zero-carbon rural schemes in Ghana and eco-homes in Sussex, reflecting her lifelong commitment to using architecture as a force for environmental and social good.
She is the founding chair of the Society of Black Architects, trustee of the UK Supreme Court Arts Trust, and former vice-chair of the London School of Architecture, Elsie has been a driving force for diversity, heritage, and inclusion in the built environment.
Her generosity and support of the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation continue to open doors for aspiring architects, empowering the next generation to build on Stephen’s legacy.

From designing the Stephen Lawrence Centre, a place of learning and inspiration built in Stephen’s memory, to global landmarks such as the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C., Rivington Place in London, and the Abrahamic Family House in Abu Dhabi, his work stands as a testament to representation, resilience, and legacy.
Through his designs, Adjaye has shown that architecture can tell powerful stories of identity, heritage, and hope for a more equitable future.
