The Story of Stephen Lawrence
A timeline of key events and changes that have been brought about in Stephen Lawrence’s name.
@SLDAYFDN
Every story begins with opportunity.
Emmanuel “Emarni” Danquah grew up watching his parents turn hard work and creativity into something meaningful, and now he’s doing the same through his studies in Creative Direction at London College of Fashion.
The Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation Scholarship gave Emmanuel the freedom to focus on his growth as a creative and the confidence to take up space in rooms he once felt excluded from.
Financial barriers often make higher education a distant dream for young people. Your contribution helps break those barriers, giving students like Emmanuel the chance to thrive and shape their own future.
This scholarship was made possible through our partnership with @adidasuk and @lcflondon_ at London College of Fashion, UAL.

Born in Sierra Leone and trained in Edinburgh, Reuben Johnson Oluwole Wright became the earliest known Black member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (@riba ) in 1950. His achievement marked a turning point in architectural history, breaking barriers and paving the way for greater representation within the field.
At the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation, we celebrate pioneers like Wright, whose courage and excellence redefined what was possible for generations of Black architects to come. His story reminds us that progress begins when one person dares to open the door for others.
Help us continue opening doors for young people from underrepresented backgrounds.

At the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation, we believe that wellbeing and opportunity grow from strong, connected communities.
This World Mental Health Day, we’re standing with young people, especially those from underrepresented communities to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and create spaces where every voice matters and every dream feels possible.
Because when communities come together to listen, uplift, and act, young people find the confidence to dream bigger, aim higher, and build brighter futures.
💛 Our challenge to you: take one action today that strengthens your community - whether it’s checking in on a young person, sharing a resource, or starting a conversation about mental health.
👉🏾 Donate today to help us continue supporting the mental health, education, and empowerment of young people across the UK.

Black History Month 2025 | Celebrating Seyi Alabi
We’re proud to celebrate Seyi Alabi, a Stephen Lawrence Living Legacy alumnus, whose journey as an architect continues to inspire us all.
Seyi’s career is thriving, and with it, Stephen’s living legacy continues to grow. One of his standout projects, The Outrigger and Garden Pod, reflects creativity, resilience, and innovation — designed for his growing family and featured on Channel 4’s Extraordinary Extensions with Tinie Tempah (Series 2, Episode 3).

The project reimagined a shared structure while preserving the neighbour’s section, showcasing thoughtful design within real-world constraints. The result is a refined, modern space brought to life through red brickwork, standing seam metal finishes, and bespoke details like a garden pod with an automated skylight.
Stephen’s dream of becoming an architect continues to open doors for others.
Help us ensure more young people can overcome barriers and build brighter futures, just as Seyi has.

Black History Month Spotlight: Paul Revere Williams
Known as the “Architect to the Stars,” Paul Revere Williams (1894–1980) was the first Black member of the American Institute of Architects. Despite facing racism and exclusion, he went on to design over 3,000 buildings, including luxury homes in Beverly Hills and iconic public projects like Los Angeles International Airport.
Williams stood firm in power and pride, breaking barriers in architecture and paving the way for future generations of Black architects. His legacy reflects the very dream Stephen Lawrence held, to shape the world through architecture.

At this year’s @riba UK Members forum, important discussions took place around ethical engagement in architecture from the issue of unpaid internships and free student work to the unfair expectation of overtime that too often makes experience exclusionary. These barriers highlight why support networks are vital in ensuring the next generation of architects can thrive.
We were proud to see Seyi share his journey into architecture and beyond, as a bursary recipient and member of Stephens living legacy.
Stephen’s dream of becoming an architect continues to open doors for others, but we need your help to ensure more young people can overcome barriers and build brighter futures.
