Each year, we honour Stephen’s life by inspiring individuals, schools, and communities to drive change. Stephen Lawrence Day is more than remembrance, it’s a day to celebrate progress, challenge injustice, and empower young people to imagine their futures. Black History Month Spotlight: Paul Revere Williams
Known as the “Architect to the Stars,” Paul Revere Williams (1894–1980) was the first Black member of the American Institute of Architects. Despite facing racism and exclusion, he went on to design over 3,000 buildings, including luxury homes in Beverly Hills and iconic public projects like Los Angeles International Airport.
Williams stood firm in power and pride, breaking barriers in architecture and paving the way for future generations of Black architects. His legacy reflects the very dream Stephen Lawrence held, to shape the world through architecture.

At this year’s @riba UK Members forum, important discussions took place around ethical engagement in architecture from the issue of unpaid internships and free student work to the unfair expectation of overtime that too often makes experience exclusionary. These barriers highlight why support networks are vital in ensuring the next generation of architects can thrive.
We were proud to see Seyi share his journey into architecture and beyond, as a bursary recipient and member of Stephens living legacy.
Stephen’s dream of becoming an architect continues to open doors for others, but we need your help to ensure more young people can overcome barriers and build brighter futures.

Today marks the beginning of Black History Month UK 2025
This year’s theme, Standing Firm in Power and Pride, honours the strength, resilience, and achievements of the Black community.
At the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation, we are marking this month by celebrating Black architects who paved the way. Architecture was close to Stephen’s heart . It was his dream to become an architect, and we honour his legacy by spotlighting pioneers who stood firm in the face of barriers and built a path for future generations.
Throughout October, we’ll share stories of trailblazing Black architects whose legacies embody both power and pride, and continue to inspire us today.

When Black men work in education they are often boxed in by stigmas, labelled unprofessional or aggressive. Sayce Holmes-Lewis is one of those voices turning that narrative upside down. As founder and CEO at @mentivity , Mayoral Advisor, community entrepreneur and father, Sayce has built rapport with students in spite of the misconceptions.
Stories like his show why we must reject exclusion and assumption and instead foster support, respect and understanding for all learners.
Have you seen something similar, either personally or in your community? What helped shift those perceptions?
At the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation we champion inclusive education that embraces neurodiversity, challenges bias and gives every young person a fair chance to succeed.

Exclusion is not the answer.
When Lavinya Stennett @gottabelavin_ya shared her story with @fortheculture, she spoke about being permanently excluded from school on more than one occasion for what was labelled as “audacious behaviour.”
She refused to let that stigma define her. Instead, she went on to earn a scholarship at the University of London, studied in New Zealand on another scholarship, and later founded @theblackcurriculum, changing the narrative for young people across the UK.
Her journey is a powerful reminder that excluding young people doesn’t solve challenges. It pushes them further away. In the UK, Black students are five times more likely to be excluded from school than their White peers. We must invest in support, mentorship and opportunity, not punishment.
Have you witnessed examples like this yourself? Share your thoughts in the comments.
At the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation, we are committed to tackling these disparities and creating spaces where every young person can thrive.
